CISA launches More Than a Password campaign to advocate increased use of multi-factor authentication

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recently launched a social media campaign the agency indicated seeks to bolster increased adoption of multi-factor authentication (MFA) to prevent cyber intrusions.

The More Than a Password campaign kicked off at the 2022 RSA Conference, aiming to spread awareness and espouse the benefits of MFA by sharing steps enabling Americans to keep themselves safe online while also urging technology companies to make MFA available as a default option.

“Whether you call it multi-factor or two-factor authentication, this simple step can make you 99 percent less likely to get hacked,” CISA Director Jen Easterly said. “Think of it like an airbag or the seatbelt in your car—an extra layer to keep you safe in the event of an accident. We need to get the word out that to stay safe online, every American needs to have More Than a Password on all their sensitive accounts. And if you have an account that doesn’t offer an option for MFA, urge your provider to begin offering this essential security feature.”

Second forms of authentication include text message or email; an authenticator app; push notifications; and the use of a Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Key.

CISA recommends users deploy MFA on all their sensitive accounts, including email, bank accounts, social media, online stores, gaming, and streaming entertainment services.

The added layer of protection also makes it more difficult for potential perpetrators to access an organization’s information systems.
