NIST challenge targets advancement in incident command dashboard tech

The U.S. Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced plans to launch a competition seeking to advance incident command dashboard technologies aiding emergency response.

The Command Dashboard Integrating Next-Gen or CommanDING, Tech Challenge would unite first responders, video analytics and indoor localization professionals, public safety experts, and participants to bolster the role of incident command dashboards for public safety.

“The CommanDING Tech Challenge will encourage innovation for developing user-friendly, next-generation interfaces designed for and with public safety, while showcasing the latest capabilities of public safety communications research areas like IoT, analytics, and location-based services,” NIST Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) Division Chief Dereck Orr said. “We can’t wait to see the innovators’ concepts and prototypes for public safety incident command dashboards.”

Participants are slated to present entries focused on 3D laser scans of buildings, indoor location tracking technology, video analytics, Internet of Things, and personal area data networks – and integrate such to deliver incident command dashboards for first responders.

Competition is presently accepting entries, with multiple stages running through April 2023. Up to $1 million will be awarded prizes throughout four challenge stages.

Interested parties can visit the challenge website to learn more about eligibility requirements.
