DHS S&T releases interactive training tool for explosive detection canine teams

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) recently initiated a new interactive training tool for handlers and trainers of explosive detection canines.

The effort would upgrade Person-Borne Explosives Detection (PBED) capabilities. PBED canines must be able to detect and track explosives in motion and concealed on a person, in addition to monitoring threats hidden within stationary objects.

“Detection canines are among the most versatile mobile detection tools we have to protect the homeland,” DHS Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Under Secretary for Science and Technology Catherine Cross said. “Working dogs provide a vital capability for national security, and ongoing efforts to enhance their effectiveness helps strengthen our ability to keep our country safe. This new training resource will support frontline practitioners to protect soft targets and crowded venues from explosive threats.”

The DHS S&T guideline includes descriptions of training techniques, video clips, and tips for evaluating canines for potential PBED detection capabilities, officials noted, outlining the training tool was developed in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University-Applied Physics Laboratory.

“Hundreds of data points from individual evaluations have gone into making this product,” S&T Detection Canine Program Manager Guy Hartsough said. “We’re excited to provide this guideline to the detection canine community and are confident it will have a significant impact on the effectiveness of their safety operations.”
