For its latest Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) solicitation, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is accepting applications for research proposals on any of seven current technology needs, which will be competitively selected.

Small business applicants can submit ideas for:

  1. Accurate and real-time hardware-assisted detection of cyber attacks
  2. Air cargo manifest analysis to help screeners
  3. Credentialing for first responders
  4. Integration of alarm resolution sensors by machine learning
  5. Server-to-server communication, voice communications, and 3GPP-standards for mission-critical services
  6. Reduced order modeling of critical infrastructure protection surfaces
  7. Theoretical classification methodologies meant to enable detection by predicted signatures

“One of the best ways for small business to begin partnering with DHS is with the non-dilutive funding through the SBIR program, which is designed to engage them in federal research and development,” Dusty Lang, DHS SBIR Director, said. “Publishing the annual solicitation is an exciting time for our program as we prepare to foster new relationships with small businesses in support of the pursuit of innovation.”

The program, and affiliated solicitation, encourage federal innovation guided by small businesses, which in turn are rewarded with participation in federal research and development projects. It also guides private sector commercialization of SBIR-funded solutions through competitive contracting.

Proposals must be submitted online and will be accepted through Jan. 17, 2023.
