Bill targets broadband infrastructure protections

U.S. Rep. John Joyce (R-PA) has introduced the Information and Communication Technology Strategy Act (H.R.1354), which he indicated would combat the influence of foreign-made devices on the nation’s high-speed internet framework.

“As we continue to expand broadband internet into rural communities, we need to ensure that we keep our national security in mind,” Joyce said. “Fighting to protect our communications networks from bad actors – like the Chinese Communist Party – must be at the forefront of our work. This legislation is a common sense step towards securing our internet infrastructure.”

Bill proponents noted the legislation would establish a Department of Commerce (DOC) organized study examining the extent technology from
Chinese Communist Party-controlled companies such as Huawei and ZTE are a part of the nation’s telecommunications network.

Per the bill, the DOC would also be required to provide an update to Congress on the resources necessary to fully source the nation’s broadband infrastructure from allies and domestically, making it more difficult for foreign adversaries to interfere in the American telecommunications network.

Bill supporters maintain as advancements in spectrum and broadband technologies continue to grow, it is critical American manufacturers remain a global leader in inventing, building, and deploying high-speed and reliable devices to facilitate internet access.
