Reporting in the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program finds that violent crime decreased across the country an estimated 4.5 percent when comparing 2024 to 2023.
The FBI’s crime statistics are based on reports from more than 16,000 state, county, city, university and college, and tribal agencies. Together the agencies cover nearly 96 percent of the United States population. The reports were submitted through the National Incident-Based Reporting System and the Summary Reporting System, officials said.
According to the report, a violent crime occurred, on average, every 25.9 second in 2024, including a murder every 31.1 minutes and a rape every 4.1 minutes.
“FBI Cleveland is committed to crushing violent crime and protecting the nearly 6 million people who call northern Ohio home. The crimes we see are not unlike those in larger cities. Every day, our neighborhoods are targeted, and people are threatened with a variety of threats, oftentimes, evolving into larger crimes or as part of a criminal network,” FBI Cleveland Special Agent in Charge Greg Nelsen said.
Murder and non-negligent manslaughter saw a nationwide decrease of 14.9 percent in 2024, when compared to the previous year, and the number of rapes saw a decrease of 5.2 percent. Aggravated assault declined by 3 percent and robbery decreased by 8.9 percent.
The UCR also reported on Hate Crimes. In 2024, 16,419 agencies participated in the Hate Crime collection, and found that agencies submitted 11,679 criminal hate crime incident, and 13,683 related offenses motivated by bias toward race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender or gender identity. According to the FBI’s UCR Program, hate crime incidents decreased 1.5 percent from 11,041 in 2023 to 19,873 in 2024.
