The U.S. Coast Guard recently awarded a contract to Davie Defense to build two Arctic Security Cutters at its Helsinki Shipyard in Finland and three domestically.

Previous contracts were awarded in December, bringing the total number of Arctic Security Cutters ordered to 11. The orders are part of a presidential directive to rapidly expand the U.S. icebreaker fleet. They also support the Coast Guard’s modernization under Force Design 2028.

“Awarding these contracts ensures the United States maintains its leadership as a maritime power in the Arctic,” Adm. Kevin E. Lunday, Coast Guard commandant, said. “Accelerating construction of these cutters will enable the Coast Guard to defend our northern border and approaches, while strengthening domestic shipbuilding and reinforcing the nation’s industrial base.”

The cutters will help build a robust icebreaker fleet that will enable the Coast Guard to control, secure and defend U.S. Alaskan borders and Arctic maritime approaches, facilitate maritime commerce, and respond to crises and contingencies in the region.

“Revitalizing the U.S. Coast Guard’s icebreaking capabilities is crucial for our security and prosperity, and today’s announcement is an important step in that direction,” Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said.

Delivery of the first cutter is expected in early 2028.
