The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently detailed the extensive security effort in securing the site for Super Bowl 50.
Among the agencies involved in the effort were the Travel Safety Administration (TSA), Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Coast Guard, Secret Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Office of Intelligence and Analysis, and the National Protection and Programs Directorate.
The TSA was responsible for passenger screening and behavior detection at mass transit locations while the Secret Service supported open-source social media monitoring for situational awareness and assisted with cybersecurity vulnerability assessments and mitigation. The Coast Guard provided maritime security and interagency support.
CBP and ICE helped ensure the legitimacy of game-related merchandise by targeting counterfeit vendors and local merchants. CBP’s Air and Maritime devision helped secure the skies above the event, deploying three Black Hawk helicopters, three Cessna C-550 and two AS350 Astar helicopters to oversee the areas of restricted airspace. Additional actions included screening cargo for contraband, weapons and explosives entering the stadium.
The DHS Blue Campaign also operated to combat human trafficking throughout airports, transit hubs, buses and hotels. The campaign also distributed awareness materials to help individuals identify indicators of human trafficking.
