Smiths Detection awarded DHS DNDO contract for radioisotope detector

Smiths Detection, Inc., announced last week that it has been awarded an initial $1.27 million for its RadSeeker handheld radioisotope detector and an additional award of a five-year indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract with the DHS Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO).

The RadSeeker handheld radioisotope detector is a self-calibrating radiation detector intended primarily for first responders and other emergency situations. The handheld device operates by locating the source of radiological material. It is used by such governmental agencies as the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

RadSeeker’s enhanced capability allows it to distinguish radiological and nuclear threats from naturally occurring radiation or other legitimate everyday radiological materials. It was specifically designed to meet DHS’s certification requirements for detecting and identifying nuclear threats.

“Under a competitively-awarded contract RadSeeker was developed in cooperation with the DHS to help keep our country safe from the threat of nuclear and radiological proliferation,” Stephen Esposito, interim president of Smiths Detection, said.“It’s another example of how we work with our customers to understand their needs and then leverage our experience as the world leader for threat detection technology to create solutions that meet the challenge.”
