BAE Systems unveils new three-dimensional warning system for aircraft

BAE Systems recently revealed its new three-dimensional advanced warning system (3DAWS), which includes a semi-active radio frequency 3D tracker, to increase aircraft survival rates in multi-threat environments.

The system was designed with open architecture standards and can be integrated with all existing U.S. Army aircraft. It can be fitted to fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft and can be used with existing radar or laser warning systems, providing an added layer of defense for air crews.

The 3D tracker technology can be used as an adjunct to BAE Systems’ Common Missile Warning System or any new passive warning system as well.

The company said the 3DAWS technology can maximize the effectiveness of current flare and directable infrared countermeasure systems and provide necessary tracking capabilities for future soft- and hard-kill countermeasure solutions to damage incoming threats.

“With the rapidly evolving threat environment, any future threat detection system must address a first-encounter threat scenario and must do so by efficiently and smartly utilizing fielded and future countermeasure techniques,” BAE’s Director of Threat Management Solutions Cheryl Paradis said. “Our new 3DAWS solution provides the capability to first make a definitive threat assessment, determining whether a track is a false alarm or an incoming threat, and then quickly respond with the appropriate countermeasure.”
