FirstNet Board approves $73.5 million FY2018 budget

The Board of the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) recently approved its FY2018 budget of $73.5 million, which will provide a focus on continued deployment, operation, and oversight of its nationwide public safety broadband network.

The budget also includes provisions for public safety outreach initiatives and to ensure that the network can keep up with future technology innovation.

“As the nation reflects on the 16th anniversary of September 11 and recovers from the devastating hurricanes and wildfires of recent weeks, we are reminded of the selflessness and bravery of our first responders,” FirstNet Chair Sue Swenson said. “FirstNet remains laser-focused on delivering lifesaving technologies that will help them save lives – every day and in every emergency.”

The approved amount is approximately 13 percent less than FirstNet’s current operating levels which, according to FirstNet, is a direct result of establishing a public-private partnership with AT&T in order to execute the project’s top priorities for the coming fiscal year.

Specifically, the FY2018 budget will assist in launching the radio access network build-out for opt-in states, testing current and future network features, evolving applications through the open application ecosystem, completing the FirstNet-dedicated public safety core and updating core services, and initiating Band 14 along the network.

“This budget reflects strong financial management and allows us to continue making remarkable progress in the coming year toward delivering public safety’s network,” FirstNet CEO Mike Poth said. “FirstNet is well positioned to deliver the financially sustainable network that we are entrusted with for the benefit of first responders and the communities they serve.”
