A variant of the Raytheon, Co. Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) scored a direct hit on an aerial target in a guided flight test after being launched from the U.S. Navy’s self-defense test ship off the coast of southern California on Sunday.
The ESSM Block 2 intermediate-range, surface-to-air missile uses a new guidance system that features a dual-mode active and semi-active radar. The ESSM variant also underwent two successful test firings earlier this year.
“This guided test takes the ESSM into a new era,” Todd Callahan, vice president of Raytheon Naval and Area Mission Defense, said. “Block 2’s improved guidance increases the ESSM’s capabilities and allows navies to remain ahead of complex threats.”
Current timelines call for production and initial operating capability of the Black 2 variant in 2020. More than 2,500 missiles are slated for production, which will determine the future course of the NATO SeaSparrow program. The program, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is overseen by a consortium of 12 NATO members.
ESSM is already the primary ship self-defense missile used by U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and large deck amphibious assault ships.
