The U.S. Senate recently passed the fiscal year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that includes $74 million for the National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC) located at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.
Funding for the base will be used to continue upgrades to the NASIC’s main campus facilities. Overcrowding is a major issue, and the staff is working in temporary structures and World War II-era facilities.
Modernization will include information technology requirements and updated facilities.
“I am pleased the Senate passed this critical defense bill, which supports the mission of NASIC and Wright-Patt by providing the funding they need to continue to upgrade their facilities and do their important work,” Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) said. “I believe it will make a difference to our Airmen and Air Force Civilians at Wright-Patt and to our troops around the world who rely on NASIC for accurate and timely intelligence. NASIC plays a critical role in helping the leadership of our country understand foreign threats to U.S. air and space operations and deserves modern facilities befitting of its work.”
Last year, the fiscal year 2019 version of the act authorized $182 million for phase one and two of the modernization project at NASIC. A total of $61 million was authorized for the first year to begin construction.
