The World Health Organization (WHO) made $14 billion in funding commitments for the Global Fund, which was established to fight HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria.
The funding commitment, announced at the Global Fund’s Sixth Replenishment Conference in Lyon, France, will be spread over three years from 2020-2022.
“I welcome the commitment made by so many donors under the auspices of France to fully finance the Global Fund for the next three-year period. This is critical to provide individuals and communities with the health interventions they need to prevent, diagnose and treat HIV, TB, and malaria and to build better and stronger health systems,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said.
The money will help 110 affected countries strengthen health systems, build diagnostics capacities, and fight these deadly diseases. The WHO will provide technical expertise and guidance at both the global and country level. HIV, TB, and malaria kill more than 2.6 million people each year.
“The replenishment of the Global Fund is not just an investment in one organization or three diseases; it’s an investment in our shared vision of a healthier, safer, and fairer world. This commitment is a strong statement that the fight against infectious diseases can be won and that our commitment to “end the epidemics” and “leave no one behind” are not empty slogans,” Tedros added.
