In the wake of September being National Preparedness Month (NPM), federal officials are encouraging family and community disaster planning now and throughout the year.
This year’s theme, “Disasters Don’t Wait. Make Your Plan Today,” emphasizes the importance of making a plan, building a preparedness kit, preparing for disasters, and teaching youth about preparedness.
Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, said National Preparedness Month serves as an opportunity to create or review emergency plans, restock emergency kits and spread awareness within the community.
“As our nation continues to combat the unprecedented disease outbreak and faces an already destructive and record-breaking hurricane season, it is more critical than ever to be vigilant and collaborate as families and communities to make certain we are all prepared,” Thompson said. “During this time of national crisis, it is clear we all need to ensure we are that much more prepared for emergencies with no or little notice.”
Officials recommend talking with family and friends about communicating before, during, and after a disaster, ensuring the plan is updated based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations due to the coronavirus; gathering supplies that will last for several days after a disaster for everyone in the home; knowing the risk of disasters in your area and checking insurance coverage; and talking with children about preparing for emergencies and what to do in the event there is separation.
