U.S. Reps. Mark Green (R-TN) and Bennie Thompson (D-MS) recently introduced the Overtime Pay for Protective Services Act of 2023, new legislation that would extend the overtime pay authority for U.S. Secret Service agents.
“For the brave men and women of the Secret Service, protecting our nation’s leaders isn’t just a job, it’s a calling; and they deserve to be compensated fairly for the hours they work and for putting their lives on the line,” Green, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, said. “As the Secret Service works to recruit and retain the best law enforcement professionals for this critical mission, Congress must ensure they are never taken for granted.”
The bill, H.R. 5675, would extend authorization for overtime pay to 2028, and require annual projections and quarterly updates to Congress by the director of the U.S. Secret Service. A similar bill was passed in 2016 to extend overtime authority to the current year.
“With a long presidential election ahead and workforce attrition on the rise, it is critical that the Secret Service has the authority to provide employees with the overtime pay they deserve,” said Thompson, ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee.
