The Department of Defense recently awarded 112 university researchers $43 million in Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) grants.
“DURIP awards build vital research infrastructure, advancing the exploration of novel ideas and upholding the cutting-edge capabilities of our academic institutions,” said Dr. Bindu Nair, Basic Research Office director in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. “This funding helps guarantee the enduring scientific excellence of our universities, nurtures the development of the next STEM workforce, and catalyzes scientific innovations that will revolutionize military capabilities in the years ahead.”
The grants will be used for the purchase of major equipment during Fiscal Year 2025 at 64 institutions in 28 states. The equipment will help research introduce new capabilities in defense-relevant research areas and augment current research.
Research areas include autonomy, human performance, photonics, quantum computing, and the design, development, and characterization of novel materials.
DURIP solicits proposals from university investigators conducting science and engineering research that boosts national defense. Projects also should ensure the future of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics work force.
The Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering supports research, engineering, science, technology, and innovation to maintain the U.S. military’s technological advantage.
