The U.S. Coast Guard recently completed a $132.5 million rebuild of Pier November at Base Charleston, S.C., 60 days ahead of schedule.

The project included the demolition of the existing pier, removing remnants of previous pier repairs, dredging, repairing collapsed bulkheads, and shoreside utility improvements.

The new, 1,190-foot-long, 80-foot-wide pier can accommodate up to five major cutters. This increases the base’s capacity to support cutters, crews and operations in the Southeast and provides modern infrastructure to support future Coast Guard operations.

“Pier November will be home to new major Coast Guard cutters currently being constructed that will strengthen the Coast Guard’s ability to secure America’s borders and maritime approaches far at sea,” Adm. Kevin Lunday, Coast Guard commandant, said. “Base Charleston is critical to our operations and will be home to one of the largest concentrations of Coast Guard personnel, assets and capabilities.”

The Coast Guard received a $25 billion federal grant for the project, the largest capital investment in the service’s history. The Coast Guard’s Facilities Design and Construction Center managed the project.

Work was part of an effort to expand and modernize Base Charleston. Other work includes the demolition and reconstruction of Pier Mike and building engineering, multifunctional and medical facilities.
