FirstNet prepares for deployment of nationwide public safety broadband network

The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) moved forward on Friday with its preparations for a public-private partnership to deploy and operate a nationwide public safety broadband network.

During their meeting in Chicago, the FirstNet board of directors provided strategic guidance for the overall plan and indicated that deployment remains on track for November.

“We have a clear focus to ensure the partnership is successful starting day one,” Sue Swenson, chair of the board of FirstNet, said. “Our goal is to hit the ground running with our partner to deliver the best solution to public safety and the states.”

Part of the FirstNet strategic guidance includes establishing a chief customer officer (CCO) to coordinate consultation and state plans, product management, and marketing for the future users of the network, as well as the creation of the network program officer (NPO) to work with FirstNet’s industry partner on Radio Access Network deployment activities in the states and territories.

“Establishing the CCO and NPO offices now will enable FirstNet to be the best business partner and public safety advocate, both now and post-award,” FirstNet President TJ Kennedy said. “The evolution of our advocacy program will help us serve public safety and drive adoption of the network.”
