Democratic delegation meets with allies in Europe and the Middle East

U.S. Sens. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Reps. Niki Tsongas (D-MA) and Susan Davis (D-CA) returned from an overseas diplomatic Congressional delegation on Monday.

The national security-focused overseas delegation visited Vienna, Austria, where it held a series of meetings regarding compliance between the major countries involved in the Iran nuclear agreement. They also received direct updates on the status of the multi-national agreement between the United States, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany and Iran, as well as each countries’ respective progress in meeting the standards set out by the agreement.

The delegation also met with experts in Vienna on the state of counterterrorism in regards to the recent attacks in Brussels, Belgium.

After departing Vienna, the lawmakers traveled to the Kingdom of Jordan, where they met with Prince Faisal Bin Al Hussein. The group discussed the current concerns in the region and the country’s efforts to manage the Syrian refugee crisis.

After directly meeting with with Syrian refugees themselves, the group received military officials with U.S. Central Command who gave an update on the ongoing fight against ISIS.

The group concluded its visit in Israel, where they consulted with senior Israeli military and diplomatic leaders, as well as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to discuss issues affecting Israel’s security in the region.
