Students studying cybersecurity at Mississippi State University (MSU) received help from the National Science Foundation (NSF) this week with the announcement of a $3.11 million award to expand its CyberCorps Scholarship program.
“Cybersecurity is an increasingly important component of our national security,” U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss) said of the announcement. “Mississippi State has established itself by preparing students to be well-trained cybersecurity professionals. I am pleased the university has secured funding to continue this program for another five years.”
The CyberCorps Scholarship for Service program is administered by the MSU Center for Computer Security Research. It partners with other colleges and universities to train cybersecurity professionals for the government’s workforce. It also supports East Mississippi Community College students before they transfer into the university’s program specifically.
As of August, the school has seen a $1.49 million installment of the funds. The full amount will keep the program running through July 2022. For such programs, MSU is currently noted as one of 16 National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations.
