Smuggling attempts in Port of Nogales net CBP nearly $950,000 in heroin, methamphetamine

In two foiled attempts to smuggle heroin and methamphetamine into the United States, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Port of Nogales seized nearly $950,000 worth of heroin and methamphetamine this week.

The smuggling methods varied, of course. In one case, a 45-year-old Mexican man stuffed almost 40 pounds of meth in the front and rear seats of his Jeep. Officers that uncovered it noted the drugs’ value at more than $101,000.

The second case concerned a 27-year-old U.S. man whose Pontiac was pulled over for additional searching. During that more extensive perusal, officers plucked 33 different packages of heroin from inside the vehicle’s roof. In all, nearly 50 pounds were concealed in the structure, resulting in the man’s arrest and the seizure of almost $850,000 worth of drugs.

Both the Mexican and U.S. men were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations for processing, while CBP seized both the drugs and the vehicles.
