J. Scott Cameron recently began his tenure as the new president of the National Intelligence University (NIU) at a formal convocation ceremony held on Aug. 25.
Established in 1962, Cameron becomes the 18th leader in the university’s history and the third overall to hold the title of president. He takes over for David Ellison, who has served as the university’s president since 2009.
Cameron is the first leader in university history that comes from outside the U.S. military or the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). His tenure also marks the first year in which the university begins operations at its new campus in Bethesda, Maryland after spending the first 55 years at a campus in Washington, D.C.
“Dr. Cameron is the right person, in the right job, at the right time,” Lt. Gen. Vincent R. Stewart, USMC, Defense Intelligence Director, said. I am confident he will bring fresh ideas and fresh perspectives to NIU.”
Prior to joining NIU, Cameron served in various capacities at the National Counterterrorism Center since its inaugural year in 2004. He also spent 14 years at Washington State University from 1986-2000, working in a number of academic leadership capacities.
NIU is an accredited academic institution that offers three intelligence-related degree programs as well as a number of graduate certificates in intelligence and specialized topics.
