The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) highlighted last week two new checkpoint technologies recently unveiled at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
The technologies available include facial recognition and less invasive body scanners with increased detection capabilities. The former works to automate ID and boarding pass verification, allowing international fliers to use a biometric recognition system to verify their identity. Their photo is taken and matched against their passport photo, and the system automatically matches the passenger’s name on their boarding pass and passport.
The less invasive body scanners build off existing Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) units–or body scanners. The advanced technology lets TSA officers know if improper reads are simply because a passenger is positioned incorrectly–reducing a need for as many pat downs. It also removes the need for passengers to raise their hands above their heads during scans.
“Our selection as a TSA Innovation Task Force site gives LAWA the opportunity to see how these new products could help improve the guest experience at LAX,” LAWA Chief Innovation and Commercial Strategy Officer Justin Erbacci said. “We are excited about the way these technologies can help smooth the journey for passengers using LAX while enhancing security at the same time.”
These efforts have supplemented the installation of automated screening lanes at LAX, which automate many carry-on baggage screening procedures. They automatically divert any carry-ons that may contain prohibited items and return empty bins to the front of the checkpoint. They also have larger bins and utilize Radio Frequency ID tags.
