The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) recently hosted a workshop on radiological and nuclear investigations with representatives from Eastern Europe and the Caucasus region law enforcement agencies in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Workshop discussions addressed the importance of clearly identified roles and responsibilities, quick access to accurate information and proper investigation management techniques during chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) investigations. Training sessions involved the availability of CBRNE materials, their uses in medicine and academia and the threats they pose.
Participants examined case studies on CBRNE crimes and investigations, evaluated past investigative approaches to smuggled radiological and nuclear materials and discussed potential gaps in those investigations. They also worked with experts to examine possible solutions to address gaps and enhance investigative capabilities.
NNSA, in partnership with INTERPOL, organized the Cross Border Radiological and Nuclear Investigations and Coordination workshop through its Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence.
