TSA completes implementation of enhanced screening procedures for carry-on bags

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced on Thursday that it has implemented new screening procedures for carry-on baggage at airports across the nation in an effort to enhance baseline aviation security.

Travelers will now be required to place all electronics larger than a cell phone into separate bins for X-ray screening at security checkpoints. Additionally, TSA officers are now authorized to instruct travelers to separate other items from carry-on baggage that can obstruct X-ray images.

“I am committed to continue raising the baseline for aviation security, and these enhanced screening measures enable TSA officers to better screen for threats to passengers and aircrew while maintaining efficiency at checkpoints throughout the U.S.,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said. “Our security efforts remain focused on always staying ahead of those trying to do us harm and ensuring travelers get to their destination safely.”

Implementation of the enhanced screening procedures began last summer and was implemented at all standard lanes at airport security checkpoints over the last few months. Under the new procedures, travelers could be asked to separate items like dense foods and powders from their baggage. Unidentifiable substances will not be allowed to enter aircraft cabins.

“While it is possible that passengers may experience more bag checks and additional screening of some items, TSA officers conduct screening with quicker and more targeted procedures to secure passengers and their carry-on baggage,” a TSA release stated. “As always, travelers with privacy concerns can request private screening.”
