President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal on Tuesday was applauded by U.S. Reps. Martha McSally (R-AZ) and Dan Donovan (R-NY), who argued that the agreement was “deeply flawed” and “prioritized Iran’s interests over American security.”

In announcing the termination of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Trump ordered his administration to begin the process of re-imposing sanctions on Iran and vowed to “assemble a broad coalition of nations to deny Iran all paths to a nuclear weapon.”

McSally, a member of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee and the Homeland Security Committee, said the “deeply flawed” nuclear deal allowed Iran to self-inspect, failed to address ballistic missile programs, put Iran on a “patient path” to secure a nuclear bomb in as little as seven years and “gave the Ayatollah regime hundreds of millions of dollars in cash to fund terrorism.”

“Because of this awful deal, Iran is emboldened and has continued to sabotage stability in the region while threatening our strong ally, Israel,” McSally said. “I wholeheartedly support the president’s decision to terminate U.S. participation in this rotten deal and instead levy powerful economic sanctions on the largest state-sponsor of terror in the world. In order to shut down Iran’s export of terrorism and violence—and prevent them from ever having a nuclear weapon — we must cut off their flow of resources.”

Donovan, a member of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Homeland Security Committee, also said he fully supported the president’s decision to terminate the nuclear agreement.

“I have long said that this deal prioritized Iran’s interests over American security, and it’s time to negotiate from a position of strength to stop the destabilizing behavior we have continually seen,” Donovan said. “Addressing the regime’s use of ballistic missiles, support of terrorists, work to oppress its people and threatening conduct towards the U.S. and Israel will support our global community. President Trump’s focus on putting national security before political correctness has already shown great results, and I’m hopeful that we will see continued achievements in the coming months.”
