The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing for a record-breaking number of travelers this summer at airports in the Washington, D.C. area.
TSA expects 243 million passengers and crew to come through security checkpoints between Memorial Day and Labor Day in the nation’s capital, which is higher than last year’s record 239 million people.
Last summer featured four of the top 10 busiest days in the agency’s history. Some of the busiest days this summer are expected to be around the Fourth of July and Labor Day.
At Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, TSA 41,000 passengers per day will be screened this summer, up from the typical 33,500 passengers per day. At Washington Dulles International Airport, TSA will screen about 35,000 passengers per day this summer, up from the usual 25,000 passengers per day.
Travelers are asked to come prepared when going through the screening process and to listen to the guidance of TSA officers.
Last year TSA rolled out enhanced security screening procedures at all airports, requiring travelers to place all personal electronic devices larger than a cell phone in bins.
TSA suggests arriving at the airport two hours before departure time if flying domestically and three hours early for international flights.
The agency also reminds travelers that all liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, and pastes must be 3.4 ounces or less, must fit inside a single quart-size plastic bag, and be placed in a bin for carry-on baggage screening. This includes sunblock and tanning lotions.
