TSA to install 15 more CT scanners in nation’s airports

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently announced it will install 15 more computed tomography scanners (CT) at checkpoints in U.S. airports.

The technology is already in use at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Boston’s Logan International Airport. A third unit was recently deployed to John F. Kennedy International Airport.

By the end of the year, the TSA plans to have up to 40 CT scanners installed at airports nationwide and 16 scanners installed in federal testing facilities. This will increase to more than 145 scanners by the end of fiscal year 2019.

“TSA is committed in getting the best technology to enhance security and improve the screening experience. Use of CT technology substantially improves TSA’s threat detection capability at the checkpoint,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said. “By leveraging strong partnerships with industry, we are able to deploy new technology quickly and see an immediate improvement in security effectiveness.”

The scanners create a 3-D image that can be viewed and rotated 360 degrees for visual image analysis. It eventually will lead to fewer bag checks and passengers being able to leave laptops and liquids in their carry-on bags.

This year, the 15 scanners will be installed in airports including Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Houston Hobby Airport, and Washington-Dulles International Airport.
