The Swedish government signed an agreement last week to purchase Raytheon’s Patriot air and missile defense system from the U.S. Army.

Raytheon’s Global Patriot Solutions system is a missile defense system that consists of radars and command-and-control technology. The system also includes multiple types of interceptors that work to detect, identify and defeat tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones, advanced aircraft and other threats. Further, the missile defense architecture is continuously upgraded to keep ahead of evolving threats.

Sweden is one of 16 countries that use Raytheon’s Patriot defense system.

“Sweden and 15 other countries trust our Patriot system to defend its citizens, military, and sovereignty because Patriot has a proven track record of defeating ballistic missiles and a host of other aerial threats,” Wes Kremer, president of Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, said. “Patriot in Sweden will enhance Northern European security and further strengthen the Trans-Atlantic partnership by providing a common approach to Integrated Air and Missile Defense.”

Patriot is widely used throughout Europe as Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, and Spain currently employ the Patriot air and missile defense system. Also, Romania and Poland signed Letters of Acceptance for Patriot within the past year.

Japan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Taiwan, Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and the United States also use the Patriot system.
