President Donald Trump recently proclaimed November as Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience Month to keep infrastructure and communities safe and to build awareness and appreciation of critical infrastructure.

Critical infrastructure is defined as infrastructure that is vital to communities, security, health, and the economy. It includes dams, communications, food and agriculture, healthcare and water and wastewater systems.

Security refers to reducing the effects of natural or manmade disasters and the risk of intrusions, or attacks. Resilience refers to the ability to prepare for and adapt to changing conditions as well as to recover rapidly from disruptions.

“As the Secretary of Homeland Security, I am committed to strengthening our efforts to protect and secure the infrastructure on which Americans rely, in close partnership with other federal agencies, state, local, territorial and tribal governments, and the private sector,” Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said. “Only by working together can we help ensure the nation’s critical infrastructure is secure and resilient, and be ready to respond to any cyber or physical threats we might face.”

Nielsen commended Trump for recognizing the important work the Department of Homeland Security does and for combating threats.

She also applauded Homeland Security employees and the department’s government and private sector partners.
