The joint U.S.-U.K. Swarm and Search AI Challenge: 2019 Fire Hack challenges research teams to discover ways unmanned aerial systems can be used in search and rescue missions.
The challenge is sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the United Kingdom Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), the Wright Brothers Institute and the University of Dayton Research Institute.
Teams will work remotely to find solutions to mapping wildfires, using Air Force-licensed software, while saving lives and minimizing damage. The teams will test their technology against their competition.
“It is fantastic to be able to work with DSTL on this project,” Mick Hitchcock, AFRL program manager, said. “The activity fits right into both countries’ desire to approach research differently, and involves non-traditional, innovative thinkers as partners and most importantly, get results faster. The competition is not between the two countries, but to highlight the ability to rapidly work together on tough problems.”
Groups will compete March 29-31 to select the top three teams from the United States and the United Kingdom. Winners will be awarded cash prizes and learn about funding opportunities.
The highest scoring team will be showcased at the 2019 Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International Conference and the U.K. Embassy Showcase in Washington, D.C.
