Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico recently signed an umbrella agreement to explore multiple research and technology collaborations among scientists, faculty, and students.

Under the agreement, the organizations will collaborate in areas, including advance materials and devices; bioscience for national security; computational science and engineering; cybersecurity; data analytics, systems analysis and intelligence science; emerging science and engineering capabilities for national security; energy and water; nuclear engineering and high-energy density science; and quantum information science.

“Once we have that umbrella in place, it opens the knowledge cache of both institutions — our scientific researchers collaborating with UNM’s — so that we can better serve Albuquerque, the state and the nation,” Jason Martinez, Sandia business development specialist, said.

Two collaborate projects already have launched.

Sandia will test electrical components and other materials the university used to develop advanced particle detector designs for the Atlas Detector on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

Another project will support the development of benchmarks for the Nuclear Energy Agency’s International Handbook of Evaluated Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments.

The agreement expires in 2024 but has the option to be renewed.

The university is one of five participating in the Sandia Academic Alliance Program. The program promotes collaborative research and attracting top talent.
