New Jersey will receive $57.6 million grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for emergency preparedness, terrorism prevention, and bolstering port security and transit security efforts.
“Because of our state’s proximity to New York and Philadelphia, as well as our major ports, airports, and infrastructure, New Jersey will always remain a prime target for threats,” U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) said. “Year after year, I fight for federal funds to provide law enforcement agencies, first responders, and nonprofit organizations with the resources they need to boost their security efforts to keep communities throughout our state safe.”
The funding includes $20 million from the Urban Area Security Initiative program for planning, organizing, equipping and training urban areas against acts of terrorism; $8.3 million from the Emergency Management Performance Grants program for prepare for hazard and emergency preparedness; $8 million from the State Homeland Security program for implementing state homeland security strategies; and $7.2 million in Nonprofit Security Grants to help religious and other community organizations protect themselves from security threats.
Additionally, communities throughout New Jersey will receive funding through the Port Security Grant Program, Transit Security Grant Program, and Intercity Bus Security Grant Program.
