Sens. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) and David Perdue (R-GA) recently urged the U.S. Army to select Fort Benning as the Army’s fourth corps headquarters.

Fort Benning is one of three finalists for the headquarters that is needed to fulfill National Defense Strategy requirements.

In their letter to Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy, Loeffler and Perdue, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Fort Benning was uniquely qualified to serve as headquarters.

“Fort Benning stands ready to meet all facility, deployment support infrastructure, and community support requirements needed for an October 2020 activation,” the letter said. “As the home to the Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence, Fort Benning provides unmatched training, support, and command facilities. It includes 26 million square feet of facilities and 102,000 acres of maneuver training areas capable of supporting all manner of maneuver operations, tactics, and training.”

The fort is ideally positioned to support American troops in Europe, the letter said. The facility is a 90-minute drive from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, and the fort’s Lawson Army Airfield will have a new control tower next year.

The senators also reminded McCarthy that Georgia expedites the processing of military spouses’ professional licenses.
