U.S. Sens. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Rob Portman (R-OH) introduced legislation seeking to bolster the nation’s intelligence capabilities.
The lawmakers indicated the Advancing American AI Innovation Act (S. 3175)
would establish a Department of Defense (DoD) pilot program forming artificial intelligence (AI) data libraries.
The libraries, per authorities, would aid AI software and technology development while also ensuring private companies have access to data that enables them to meet Department of Defense (DoD) needs.
“The field of artificial intelligence and the role it plays in our nation’s security are rapidly changing and expanding,” Rosen, a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (HSGAC), said. “Creating these data libraries will provide an entire sector of small startups and existing data companies with the tools to create AI models that are in line with the capabilities and needs of the DoD.”
Rosen said the measure would enhance AI public-private partnerships in AI and ensure America makes the best use of evolving AI capabilities.
“The United States cannot take its Artificial Intelligence leadership for granted,” Portman, ranking member of HSGAC, said. “We must fully utilize the public, as well as private sector, to synchronize and develop our AI capabilities across the transportation, health care, manufacturing, and national security policy spaces.”
