A total of $50 million in awards will be split between 33 states and jurisdictions as an Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR)-led effort to build up the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) network.

Such was the end result of the first-ever, competitive state, territory and Tribal nations, representative organizations for next generation (MRC-STTRONG) grant program. That program was authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act. As to the MRC, it’s a national network of 300,000 volunteers organized into approximately 750 local community-based groups. Those groups are working to improve local emergency response capabilities, reduce vulnerabilities and develop community preparedness and resilience.

“MRC units are a force multiplier for local emergency responses,” Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response Dawn O’Connell said. “The ARP-funded awards announced today will bolster response efforts in communities across the nation, building on the invaluable role that the MRC played during our fight against COVID-19.”

These MRC units organize and use local volunteers to prepare for and respond to emergencies, such as aiding emergency shelter operations or providing medical care during extreme weather. They also back state preparedness initiatives, generally helping jurisdictions to improve daily health and reduce possible risks to public health.
