The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) and Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) recently signed a joint statement of intent for collaborative research, development and foreign technical exchanges.
Under the terms of the statement, DHS S&T and MEXT will share information on mutual science and technology challenges and will explore potential research, developing, testing or evaluation activities. The goal is to promote and develop scientific and technical cooperation contributing to S&T’s homeland security needs and MEXT’s economic security matters.
“I am encouraged by the opportunity to join forces with our partners in Japan on research, development, and innovation,” Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, DHS undersecretary for science and technology, said. “I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate on technical projects that leverage our collective expertise and capabilities to enhance the safety and security of both nations.”
The statement re-affirms a commitment to cooperate in fields of science and technology and supports the Biden-Harris administration’s commit to enhance its partnership with Japan and build connections regarding science and technology.
President Joe Biden hosted Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio in April for a summit. The leaders committed to the development and protection of next-generation critical and emerging technologies.
