The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) recently launched the Remote Identity Validation Rally (RIVR), a series of technology challenges that will be held throughout the year.

DHS S&T completed the Remote Identity Validation Technology Demonstration last year and learned that while some remote identity validation technologies can perform well, commercially available products vary significantly. S&T has set benchmarks for RIVR based on this information.

This year’s challenge urges participants to deliver secure, accurate, and user-friendly remote identity validation technologies that combat identity fraud when users verify social media accounts, open bank accounts or apply for government services.

“As demand for secure, efficient access to online government and commercial services grows, S&T remains committed to working with innovative technology developers to advance remote identity validation technologies that enhance security and improve the user experience,” Arun Vemury, DHS S&T Biometric and Identity Technologies senior advisor, said. “Through the RIVR, we will partner with industry to foster innovation, incentivize competition, and accelerate progress in making these technologies more secure and reliable against evolving threats.”

Information on the various technology evaluations will be announced later this year, and an informational webinar will be held on March 12. Registration is required.

Applications for the challenge are due April 11.
