CBP launches International Remote Baggage Screening initiative

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently implemented the International Remote Baggage Screening initiative that is designed to enhance the efficiency of international travel.

Under the initiative, passengers arriving in the United States from foreign airports can continue to their connecting flights without re-checking their bags. The exception would be if a CBP agent referred the baggage for further inspection.

The initiative does not change the current Transportation Security Administration screening requirements or the process for checked baggage. The goal is to reduce wait times and improve the overall travel experience.

Under the initiative, CBP personnel can view checked baggage x-ray images captured at the foreign international airport and review them remotely before an aircraft lands.

“As part of our innovation efforts in air travel, CBP is leveraging technology to enhance baggage inspections to further secure and streamline travel,” Diane Sabatino, CBP acting executive assistant commissioner office of field operations, said. “The International Remote Baggage Screening initiative is a significant step forward in modernizing our processes and providing a secure and seamless experience for international travelers.”

The initiative was tested on American Airlines’ daily flight from Sydney International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport and will expand to other routes and airlines.
