The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New York District and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) recently entered into a 10-year agreement to revitalize and modernize the USMMA campus in Kings Point, N.Y.

The USMMA academy on Long Island is one of five federal service academies. The majority of its facilities were built in the 1940s and have not been modernized since. The lack of modernization hampers the training and demanding coursework 21st century midshipmen are required to complete.

“We are looking forward to rehabilitating and modernizing the campus infrastructure at the USMMA,” Col. Alexander Young, Commander USACE New York District, said. “It is necessary to ensure current and future generations of Midshipman receive a first-class education. We hope this partnership will serve as a building block for additional collaboration both short and long-term. I’d like to thank all of our partners at every level for their tremendous support.”

USMMA academies educate those who serve as merchant marine officers and commissioned officers in the U.S. armed forces.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New York District is responsible for engineering projects and services in the New York and New Jersey region including conducting environmental restoration, improving public spaces, managing water resources, and providing critical infrastructure development.
