The House Homeland Security Committee recently advanced legislation that addresses transnational repression.
The Law Enforcement Support and Counter Transnational Repression Accountability Act would instructs the Department of Homeland Security to create a public service announcement campaign to educate the public on the growing threat of transnational repression.
“The Law Enforcement Support and Counter Transnational Repression Act will empower victims to step out of the shadows, build community relationships with law enforcement and ultimately protect our immigrant communities by giving them a chance to pursue the American dream without fear of retaliation from the people and places they’ve fled,” said U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans (R-CO), who introduced the bill.
The legislation would also expand access to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s transnational repression hotlines for victims in diaspora communities.
“Countering transnational repression operations on U.S. soil is critical to defending our sovereignty,” Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green said. “This bipartisan bill also provides education and support to victims who have been harassed or threatened by our adversaries, like the Chinese Communist Party and Iran, on U.S. soil. I look forward to working with Representative Evans and our colleagues on both sides of the aisle to swiftly send this bill to the Senate to counter this malicious activity in our communities.”
