U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL), chair of the House Armed Services Committee, unveiled legislation that would invest $150 billion to modernize the American military.
The legislation was developed in conjunction with the Senate Armed Services Committee to prioritize defense spending on modernization, border security and strengthening national security.
“This legislation is a historic investment of $150 billion to restore America’s military capabilities and strengthen our national defense Rogers and U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a statement. “Our military’s resources have declined over the years, and defense spending as a percentage of GDP has dropped to the lowest levels since before WWII. Our defense industrial base has weakened. America’s deterrence is failing and without a generational investment in our national defense, we will lose the ability to defeat our adversaries. With this bill, we have the opportunity to get back on track and restore our national security and global leadership. President Trump has a visionary strategy of Peace through Strength, and this investment is how we begin to execute it. I’m looking forward to passing this bill and building a ready, capable, and lethal fighting force.”
The legislation includes initiatives for revitalizing the defense industrial base, strengthening the U.S. Department of Defense efforts toward border security, deterring Chinese Community Party aggression, improving fiscal efficiency within the DoD, and enhancing servicemembers quality of life.
“This legislation represents a generational upgrade for our nation’s defense capabilities, including historic investments in new technology,” Wicker said. “This is about building the future of American defense, achieving peace through strength, and ultimately deterring war. I thank President Trump for his leadership in strengthening our military and enhancing our national security capabilities.”
