The U.S. Navy recently awarded Raytheon, a defense solutions provider, a $536 million, follow-on contract for the SPY-6 family of radars. SPY-6 enhances defense against air, surface, and ballistic threats.

The original contract was an Integration and Production Support contract and included upgrading Flight IIA destroyers with the SPY-6(V)4 variant. Raytheon will provide continued support for the SPY-6 family of radars through training, engineering services, ship installation, integration and testing. It also will provide software upgrades that enhance radar capabilities.

“SPY-6 is the most advanced radar in the U.S. naval fleet, providing ships a new level of defense against evolving threats,” Barbara Borgonovi, Raytheon president of Naval Power, said. “This contract highlights the essential role of this technology in supporting the U.S. Navy’s technology roadmap for several decades to come.”

Work is expected to be completed before May 2026. Two U.S. Navy ships recently were equipped with SPY-6. Three ships are scheduled to have the radar installed and tested this year. SPY-6 is expected to be deployed on more than 60 U.S. Navy ships over the next 10 years.

Raytheon is a RTX business. Virginia-based RTX is the world’s largest aerospace and defense company. Sales totaled more than $80 billion in 2024.
