RTX company Raytheon announced it was selected by the German government to provide radar for installation on some of the country’s F127 frigates.

The technology, the Raytheon built SPY-6(v)1, features four array faces equipped with 37 radar modular assemblies that provide continuous 360-degree situational awareness. The technology was requested under a foreign military sales contract with the U.S. Navy that includes comprehensive support and services to adapt the radar to the frigates’ design. The announcement makes Germany the first international customer for SPY-6.

“Germany’s selection of SPY-6 reaffirms the global confidence in the radar’s advanced capabilities and its critical role in enhancing naval defense,” Barbara Borgonovi, president of Naval Power at Raytheon, said. “Integrating the radar on F127 frigates will provide the German Navy with a multi-mission solution that enables faster and more informed decision-making at sea.”

The Spy-6 family of radars can perform air and missile defense on seven classes of ships. According to Raytheon it is the most advanced, most tested maritime radar in the world and is one of several radar programs designed and manufactured at the company’s Radar Development Facility in Andover, Mass. The vertically integrated and highly automated facility is one of the most advanced in the world, the company said and includes radar testing and integration around the clock at its 30,000-square foot site.
