The U.S. Department of Defense recently released six critical technology areas that are designed to address the modern battlefield’s greatest challenges.

The six areas are applied artificial intelligence, biomanufacturing, contested logistics technologies, quantum and battlefield information dominance, scaled directed energy, and scaled hypersonics.

The areas represent the cutting edge of research and engineering and are intended to empower warfighters to overcome adversarial threats and maintain operational dominance.

“Our adversaries are moving fast, but we will move faster,” Emil Michael, under secretary of defense for research and engineering, said. “The warfighter is not asking for results tomorrow; they need them today. These six critical technology areas are not just priorities; they are imperatives. The American warfighter will wield the most advanced technology to maximize lethality.”

The department has committed to delivering technologies that will determine American military might into the future.

“Our nation’s military has always been the tip of the spear,” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said. “Under Secretary Emil Michael’s six critical technology areas will ensure that our warriors never enter a fair fight and have the best systems in their hands for maximum lethality. The War Department is committed to remaining the most deadly fighting force on planet Earth.”
