A new interagency effort aims to crack down on fraud in the trucking industry to reduce highway fatalities. The effort includes the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice.
“Criminals who exploit our nation’s transportation systems through fraud and deception are not only breaking the law–they are putting the safety and security of the American public at risk,” John Condon, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) acting executive associate director, said. “HSI will bring the full weight of our investigative authorities, financial expertise and global law enforcement capabilities to this historic, whole-of-government effort. Alongside our federal partners we will aggressively pursue the individuals and criminal networks that use fraudulent documents, illicit financial schemes and other unlawful means to circumvent our laws and profit at the expense of public safety.”
As part of these efforts, the Department of Homeland Security conducted a synchronized single-day sweep targeting more than 200 training schools in 23 states. HSI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement will provide updates on ongoing investigations targeting CDL-related businesses and schools.
The Department of Justice launched the Joint Task Force Crossroads of America, a multi-state task force to safeguard the highway system and strengthen border security.
