The Department of the Navy and Hunt Military Communities, a military housing developer and owner, recently closed on a $1.7 billion initiative to modernize housing for sailors in Virginia’s Hampton Roads region.
There are unaccompanied housing needs in Newport News, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Va. The Homeport Hampton Roads Phase II will build or renovate 8,098 homes over five years. The project now moves from concept to construction. Huntington Hall is among the aging facilities that will be replaced.
The project increases long-term sustainment funding by 400 percent to ensure high-quality housing throughout the life of the agreement and is expected to save taxpayers more than $325 million by freeing resources for other Navy quality-of-life priorities.
“Our skilled warfighters are the asymmetric advantage that makes our Navy great,” Acting Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Hung Cao said. “This investment in the renovation and building of housing for more than 8,000 Sailors in the Hampton Roads area ensures our sailors have the quality of service they deserve while being good stewards of the American taxpayer’s money.”
Virginia provided the City of Newport News an interest-free loan to support the project.
The project aligns with the Department of Defense’s priorities to modernize military infrastructure.
