Department of Defense (DOD) officials have released a summary outlining the agency’s intent to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) into the future.
Critical elements of Harnessing AI to Advance Our Security and Prosperity include accelerating the delivery and adoption of AI; establishing a common foundation for scaling AI’s impact across DOD and enabling decentralized development and experimentation; evolving partnerships with industry, academia, allies and partners; cultivating a leading AI workforce; and leading in military AI ethics and safety.
The agency said its AI outlay would focus on rapid, iterative and responsible delivery and the use of lessons learned to create repeatable and scalable processes and systems improving functions and missions across the department.
The DOD said AI is poised to change the character of the future battlefield and the pace of threats faced in today’s security environment, adding America, along with its allies and partners, must adopt AI to maintain its strategic position and prevail on future battlefields.
Officials envision AI will impact every corner of the DOD, spanning operations, training, sustainment, force protection, recruiting, healthcare and others, with the focal point being of DOD AI being the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, which was established last June.
The DOD AI strategy supports the National Defense Strategy and is in conjunction with the department’s overall efforts to modernize information technology to support the warfighter, defend against cyber attacks and leverage emerging technologies.
