Legislation being considered in the U.S. House of Representatives this week would provide appropriations to the Department of Defense (DOD) for military activities.

The FY 26 Department of Defense Appropriations Act would provide funding for military personnel, operation and maintenance, procurement, revolving and management funds, and
research, development, test and evaluation.

A bipartisan amendment introduced by U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) would consolidate United States Army North and United States Army South into a newly formed Western Hemisphere Command that would be headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio–Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

“San Antonio, which is widely known as Military City USA, is vital to America’s national security interests,” Gonzales said. “From the critical mission sets that take place at Joint Base San Antonio, to our proximity to the U.S. Mexico border, to the cyber capabilities employed at 16th Air Force Wing and NSA Texas, the existing military infrastructure in San Antonio is second to none, and should continue playing a key role in the consolidation of Army North and South into one Western Hemisphere Command.”

The location was selected for its proximity to the United States–Mexico border and more than $158 million in military infrastructure investments, the amendment said.
